UNION PISTOLS

The UNION pistols were developed by a gunsmith from Marseilles, Mr. Marcel Seytres. His workshop was located at 17 Rue Denis Papin in St. Etienne.

The first UNION pistols appeared around 1925 and production ceased a bit before WW2.
These pistols have numerous common points with the 1906 Browning. This type of weapon was very popular between the two World Wars and numerous French, Belgian and Spanish manufacturers were inspired by it.
This manufacturer (UNION), nonetheless brought improvements as evidenced by the numerous patents that we have discovered.
Upon examination of a Seytres manufactured pistol, is obvious that the manufacturing was of very high standard and this had led the administration and certain organizations to equip their personnel with this pistol. The company seemed to be doing well since, following the fire that destroyed gun maker Societe d’Armes et de mecanique Generale of the city of Louhans, mr. Seytres hired part of its personnel, including two Spanish foremen: Mr. Larena (machining operations) and Mr. Etchebum (Assembly operations).

At the time, daily production was around 50 pistols in 7.65 French Long in order to participate to the French army trials of 1933.

There were two models with unlocked breach similar to the Spanish STAR and one locked breach similar to the 1911 Colt.

The results of these trials are described in part three of this article. Later still, the Seytres company built Colt inspired pistols in 9mm Parabellum (Luger) and in 7.63 Mauser for the civilian market under the brand name of UNION-FRANCE.

Some of these weapons also incorporated a fire selector and an adjustable rear sight. The firm apparently tried to sell these weapons to foreign countries, particularly to China, as a 1941 report by the Shangai city police shows. One can encounter UNION pistols marketed under the names FURIA, GALLIA and VERNAY-CARRON.

These pistols must not be confused with Spanish –made UNION I and UNION II brands (Made by Esperanza y Unceta in Guarnica) which are, strangely, marked in English

UNION PISTOL IN 6.35mm (.25acp) SIX SHOT.

This is a small weapon, of simple but good quality manufacture. Its shape is elegant, with an “aerodynamic” rear end, slightly thicker slide faces where the markings and grasping ribs are located. The markings read PISTOLET AUTOMATIQUE FRANÇAIS “UNION” FABRIQUÉ À SAINT ÉTIENNE CAL. 6,35
UNION pistols feature an automatic magazine safety to prohibit percussion when the magazine is removed, and a safety lever  on the left side above the trigger.
Top Photo caption:  Although the grips installed on UNION pistols have various contours, they all share the same markings. One can see the brand in a banner on top, and lower, a medallion with the feathered Indian head and the words “Trade Mark”.

In addition to the previously mentioned markings, the slide is sometimes stamped “Acier garanti”. It is possible that the triple safety was also available for the long barreled version, but we have never encountered such a variant.

Triple safety
Similar in concept to the six-shot version in this caliber, this variant features a grip safety at the rear of the butt. This mechanism was patented by Mr. Marcel Seytres on June 5, 1933 and filed under patent number 750.906. This invention is described as “a safety for automatic pistols using a push lever”. Before the shot is fired under the shooter’s action, the pedal is depressed and enables the movement of the sears.

Some six or nine shot UNION pistols can be encountered with an 85mm long barrel. According to some sources, these weapons were made for export.

This version is larger than the 6,35mm but is otherwise identical. The 7,65mm UNION pistols have a strong resemblance to the RUBY and UNIQUE 17 models.

The nine shot variant of the UNION 7.65mm pistol has a longer grip whose base sometimes sports a lanyard ring. There are some manufacturing variances concerning the slide: the canelures can be vertical (17 canelures) or arced and wider (10 canelures). The grip can be either straight or curved.

Page 53

High capacity

In order to increase the firepower of the UNION pistols, Mr. Seytres designed several high capacity magazines.
At first, they were straight 25 or 50 round magazines. These magazines had the inconvenient of being particularly bulky, leading the manufacturer to design other systems.

The “Horseshoe” magazine was patented on April 8, 1930 under number 693.501. As its name indicates, this magazine is curved over its length. At one end it enters the grip while the other end attaches to the frame through a special arrangement. There are 25, 35 and 40 shot “horseshoe”-type magazines. Side windows and numbered markers allow seeing the state of the magazine at a glance. A loading accessory also had been designed, as evidenced by the above mentioned patent application. Such a magazine had been patented in 1906 by Bernardon and Martin.

Another invention, covered by patent No. 704-787 of February 24, 1034 involves  U-shaped hi-capacity transversal magazine. Its principle is the same as that of the “horseshoe”-type magazine’s but it is bent in an opposite direction and has only one attachment point.

This transverse magazine must not have been less practical than the “horseshoe” type for several reasons;

The assembly’s thickness makes carrying it delicate;
The magazine is more fragile since it is supported at one end only, and being bent across its thickness cannot be very sturdy. In addition, the free end of this type of magazine can easily be snagged. As it is gradually emptied, the center of gravity ships to one side which can cause the loss of the aiming point and therefore cause inaccuracy.

Selective fire

Some UNION pistols were fitted with a selective fire mechanism for semi- or full automatic fire. This system was invented by Mr. Detrat, manager of manufacturing at the Seytres Company on March 1st, 1937. The selector is located on the right side of the slide and moves vertically. In the upper position, the pistol functions in semi-automatic mode. When the selector is lowered, a cam controls the release of the sear therefore allowing the internal hammer to fall.

Few selective fire UNION pistols were made; most of those were sold on the export market.

Top photo caption: Shown here is a cutaway of the UNION selective fire pistol. The left grip was removed in order to show the mechanism.

These pistols are built from the elements of their 7,65mm counterparts. There exist 6 or 9-shot 9mm pistols, with normal or long barrel, double or triple safety. “Horseshoe” magazines were also available for these weapons.

UNION-FRANCE pistols

This pistol is completely different from the other UNION pistols. It appears as a simplified version of the Colt 1911. There is no grip safety and the pistol is chambered in 9 mm Luger (Parabellum) or in 7,63mm Mauser (.30 Mauser)

Bottom photo caption:

The UNION-FRANCE pistol shows some special characteristics, such as the rear sight which is marked for 1000 meters, a fire selector and the possibility to attach a combination holster and shoulder stock. These features are also found on some Spanish STAR pistols. Could there have been some correlation or commercial agreement between the St Etienne manufacturer and STAR?

Production of the UNION-FRANCE pistol was rather limited and mostly for export.
